Alcohol Dependence / Detox

Updated on 22nd November 2024

We suggest avoiding initiating detox in the community without the support of specialist services during the out of hours period. Evidence supports a planned detox with appropriate monitoring and holistic care. This leads to a safer experience which is more effective with longer lasting results.

BNSSG guidance
BNSSG guidance on Remedy includes acute withdrawal, information about detox in primary care and referral guidance specific to each area. As above, we do not anticipate that clinicians will initiate community detox from OOH because of the training and monitoring requirements.

Alcohol related NICE guidance

  • NICE CG100 (2017) – Diagnosis and management of physical complications in alcohol-use disorders. Includes information about acute alcohol withdrawal, alcohol related liver disease and alcohol related pancreatitis.
  • NICE CG115 (2011) – Diagnosis, assessment and management of high-risk drinking and alcohol dependence
  • Clinical Knowledge Summary – Alcohol problem drinking
