Toxic ingestion/ management of overdose, and Toxbase training

Updated on 3rd January 2025

SevernSide’s Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) receives the toxic ingestion cases from NHS111. These cases appear in the IUC Advice queue, are tagged as ‘Toxic Ingestion’ and have a 15 minute timeframe. Please be vigilant for these cases, and pick them up promptly.

Toxbase can be accessed via the Clinical Toolkit or BrisDoc Weblinks pages.

Toxbase e-learning is available for free. The "Learn how to use TOXBASE" e-learning module provides a helpful overview, and we ask that all clinicians undertake this training. Clinicians have fed back that the online training is directly relevant and useful for managing these cases.

Occasionally, we may have referrals from primary care about overdose/poisoning (usually non-deliberate).

If Admission is Needed Refer to:

BRI: ED

NBT: Medics (patients requiring admission under medicine for treatment can have mental health assessment, discuss with a consultant if unsure)

WGH: ED
