Hypomagnesaemia or low magnesium

This Remedy Hypomagnesaemia guideline  has advice on how to manage and replace Low Magnesium

Management:

The lab will call OOH if the level is below 0.4 mmol/L

Patients should be admitted for Iv therapy if they are symptomatic OR have a level < 0.4 mmol/l

Causes:

Diuretics

Severe diarrhoea

Poorly controlled DM/Ketoacidosis

Alcohol abuse

TPN use/short bowel syndrome/stomas

Low potassium/calcium/phosphate

Symptoms:

Often asymptomatic

Paraesthesia

Ataxia

Seizures

Tetany

Arrhythmias.
