Advice and referrals to Neurosurgery

Updated on 23rd November 2022

Neurosurgical services are based at Southmead Hospital. All referrals to neurosurgery are now made electronically via www.referapatient.org, including acute referrals. However, the neurosurgical team advise that clinicians may also wish to telephone the registrar on call (via NBT switch) about patients with ED-type life threatening presentations.

Details about how to use this referral system are provided here. You will see that the system is easy to use on a smartphone, and this means you will be able to dictate your referral. You will be alerted when the specialist has read your referral, and when the specialist submits a response.

Unfortunately, this online referral route can be time consuming but it is a requirement for all patients referred to neurosurgery whether they are in the community or in hospital. If asked for a contact details, we suggest providing the Severnside.referral@nhs.net email address, and the Professional Line phone number (0117 244 9283 and staffed 24/7).

If the plan for the patient is not completed by the end of your shift, please ensure the case is handed over (usually to the Clinical Coordinator) and passed to the Consult and Hold queue if further actions are required.
