BRI SDEC (A307)

Updated on 4th July 2025

Location: A307

Almost all medically expected patients should be directed to A307 at the BRI. Exceptions detailed below

  • Direct patients to A307 by directing them to the ED main reception – A307 is located by walking through the main ED Waiting room and there is a door to A307 just beyond this
  • State ' FOR SDEC' in your 2 line summary

Patients must arrive between: 08:00 – 19:00

Patients not suitable for SDEC

  • NEWS>5 ( except at consultant discretion)
  • Oxygen requirement > 2L (except at consultant discretion)
  • Patients under the age of 16 years
  • Patients unable to sit in a chair, recliner chair, or unable to transfer with the assistance of 1
  • Patients with an acute cerebral event
  • Patients with an acute MH presentation

Confused patients - it is recognised that the spectrum of confused patients is wide and clinician judgement can be used when assessing suitability of patients for SDEC.

Please note that CV19 and D/v are no longer exclusions for SDEC.

Weekends and deferring admission for the next day

You can defer patients to arrive the next day (eg. upper limb DVT). In these cases ask the patient to attend SDEC at 09/10:00, the unit is open 10:00-19:00 on weekends, and make their arrival date/time clear in your “2-line summary”.

It's always worth considering whether a stable patient would have a smoother pathway if admitted the next day, if you require support with this decision the SDEC consultant can help with this.

All patients who are not suitable for A307 (but are suitable for the medical take list) should be placed on the medical take list and directed to ED RECEPTION. Please ask the patient to highlight they are medically expected.
