Child Protection Information Sharing (CP-IS) Briefing

Updated on 4th August 2025

Child Protection - Information Sharing (CP-IS)

You can now see the CP-IS tab on CLEO. In brief, this indicates whether a patient aged 18 or less has known safeguarding concerns and/ or a plan in place. It should also include the contact details of the lead social worker/ safeguarding team involved in the case if you feel you need to contact them.

This youtube video provides more information about CP-IS.

We encourage all clinicians to routinely check the CP-IS tab when consulting about anyone aged < 18 years. If safeguarding issues are flagged please ensure you consider these in your consultation. Please do continue to ensure that you consider safeguarding issues in all consultations, even in the absence of any previous safeguarding concerns on CP-IS. All of the existing processes for managing safeguarding concerns remain in place so active/ current issues must be explored, documented and referred/ reported as appropriate, irrespective of whether there is a safeguarding history on CP-IS.

Child Protection Information Sharing (CP-IS) is:

  • the bridge for information to flow between the NHS and the Local Authority (being implemented nationally) in a 24-hour cycle
  • allows the NHS to check if a child who presents at an unscheduled care setting has a Child Protection Plan (CP) or is a looked after child (LAC) (Unscheduled: care setting: emergency departments, walk-in centres, out of hours GPs, minor injuries units, paediatric wards, maternity units, ambulance services)
  • allows NHS healthcare workers to have the latest CPP/LAC status for a child as long as a record is updated on the child’s file in a timely way
  • enables information to flow by matching records between health and social care systems using NHS numbers as the key identifier
  • acts as an extra channel of information sharing to support professionals in working together to safeguard children and young people
  • enables professionals to consider any implications for a particular child – why, for example frequent attendances have been made, or if several different settings have accessed a record although it doesn’t explain on the system is why information was accessed, it simply shows that it has been.

More information about the CP-IS work is provided by NHS Digital.
