Patients known to the haematology service and thought to be having a sickle crisis should go to BHOC (Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre) SDEC if there is capacity, and if there is no capacity please contact the BRI acute medical team to arrange admission to the medical SDEC.

Patients not known to the haematology service should be admitted to their local hospital - advice can be sought from the BRI Haematology team (details above).

Patients known to the haematology service needing an acute admission but not thought to be having a sickle crisis should ideally be referred to their local hospital or the appropriate hospital for their needs (e.g. NBT for stroke, BRI for STEMI etc). The exception to this would be where the haematologist specifically advises BRI admission, in which case they should talk to the acute medical team (or appropriate speciality) to arrange admission.
