Post Exposure Prophylaxis - PEP for Children and young people

Updated on 21st December 2022

PEP for children and young people potentially exposed to blood borne viruses / needle stick injury

Following potential exposure to blood-borne viruses, the risk of transmission is highest for Hepatitis B, then Hepatitis C and then HIV.  The risk of community acquired HIV in children is extremely low. It is also important to consider risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections following  sexual exposure and safeguarding concerns.

You can find guidance on managing cases where children have been exposed to blood borne viruses or needle stick injury via the following link, look under the "P" section.

In these situations, please consider safeguarding - if you have safeguarding concerns, then these are to be reported appropriately. For further details, please see BNSSG's health advice and support.
