Parvovirus (slapped cheek) management, including in pregnancy

Updated on 3rd December 2025

Update July 2024

There has been a marked increase in the number of Parvovirus B19 cases in England in the recent months. Parvovirus B19 usually exhibits no or mild no symptoms in general population, however this infection can have a significant impact on individuals who are pregnant, immunosuppressed and those with haemoglobinopathies. Please follow this link for more information.

Parvovirus B19 is a common infection, usually presenting as erythema infectiosum in children. There is a wide range of potential consequences of parvovirus B19 infection. These extend from minor febrile illness to erythema infectiosum (fifth disease, slapped cheek syndrome), a generalised rash illness clinically indistinguishable from rubella, aplastic crises in patients with increased red cell turnover, arthropathy and persistent infection in the immunocompromised. It may also cause fetal loss or fetal hydrops and so detection in pregnancy is important for monitoring and possible treatment.

This patient.co.uk link takes you to healthcare professional guidance about the clinical presentation, complications, differentials and management of Parvovirus. This includes information about investigation and management for pregnant women who have been in contact with suspected Parvovirus, or have a non-vesicular rash. This patient leaflet about slapped cheek may also be helpful.
