This guidance supports clinicians in identifying the correct pathway for catheter-related issues in both community and urgent care (IUC) settings.
Initial Catheter Issues in the Community
-
The Sirona Community Nursing Team are the first point of contact for all catheter-related problems in the community. For urgent catheter issues, call the Single Point of Access: 0300 125 6789.
Catheter Insertion Requests in IUC
-
If the patient is not housebound, a face-to-face appointment can be arranged at the IUC Treatment Centre for catheter insertion.
-
Before arranging: Notify the Clinical Coordinator (CC) and Operational Team to confirm that the skills mix at the centre is suitable to carry out the procedure.
Escalation When District Nurses Cannot Insert Catheters
-
If the District Nursing Team is unable to place or replace a catheter (e.g. due to previous failed attempts):
-
Consider escalating the case to Urology for advice or possible admission.
-
Catheter Equipment and Prescribing (OOH)
-
District Nurses will typically provide catheter equipment, flushes and associated supplies.
-
If catheter-related items are required Out of Hours (OOH):
-
Refer to the Urology Appliances section in Remedy for guidance on appropriate prescribing.
-
This section includes details on catheter types, flushes, and other necessary items.
